 1. A Mothers' Union outing?
The Mothers' Union was founded in 1876 to encourage the "training" of young women for motherhood and to stress the social importance of Christian baptism and marriage. Whilst there is no proof that this group of mothers with their children are members of the Mother's Union, it seems a likely explanation. The lady with the white hat in the back row is either named Nellie Rudd or Nellie Mayes.
